Common Name: Painted Sweetlips
Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Widespread tropical Indo-Pacific: East Africa and Red Sea to the Western Pacific. In Australia recorded from southern Western Australia, across the tropical north, south through Queensland to central New South Wales, and including Lord Howe Island.
Ecological Notes: Juveniles found in shallow estuaries and lagoons, adults favour offshore reefs and islands, along slopes and in deep lagoons, often in small schools. Specimen pictured photographed in 16 m depth.
Additional Notes: Adults uniformly silver grey, intermediate phases with pale background and alternating stripes and rows of dots, spots on tail and dorsal fins. Grows to 1 m.
