Common Name: Azure Kingfisher

Distribution: Northern and eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania.

Ecological Notes: Typically found close to tree and shrub-lined water courses. Prey items include fish, crustaceans, aquatic invertebrates and frogs. 

Additional Notes: The Azure Kingfisher plunges from overhanging perches into water to catch it will often bash its prey against the perch before swallowing it head first. Nests are at the end of a upward sloping tunnel (up to 130 cm long) dug out of soil in a riverbank.
