In 2024 SURG was granted funding to conduct marine debris surveys at a number of sites along the north coast. The surveys involve a strict protocol of 4 x 25 metre transects each 5 m wide, conducted along the shoreline adjacent to areas known to frequent recreational fishers. The debris items found are recorded and then collected, the data being entered into a statewide database compiled by the NSW Dept of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
The sites are surveyed by SURG volunteer members, and those so far completed are at Wooli, Red Rock, Nambucca Heads and South-west Rocks. In most locations numerous sites in the same estuary have been surveyed.
More sites, including some at Coffs Harbour, are planned to be surveyed in coming months.
