Manorina melanocephala
(Latham, 1801)

Common Name: Noisy Miner

Distribution: The Noisy Miner is distributed along eastern and south-eastern Australia, from around Cooktown in north Queensland to Victoria, and South Australia, and including Tasmania.

Ecological Notes: It primarily inhabits dry, open eucalypt forests that lack understory shrubs, farming and grazing areas, roadside reserves, and suburban parks and gardens with trees and grass. It feeds on nectar from flowering shrubs and trees as well as insects which it forages from shrubs and trees as well as around buildings.

Additional Notes: The Noisy Miner is a grey bird, with a black head, orange-yellow beak and feet, a distinctive yellow patch behind the eye, and white tips on the tail feathers. They form territorial groups that will fiercely defend territory and, as the name implies, they are very vocal with a range of songs, calls and alarms.
