Calidris ruficollis
(Pallas, 1776)

Common Name: Red-necked Stint.

Distribution: Mostly found in coastal regions but also inland swamps and lakes.

Ecological Notes: They are found on mudflats, beaches and swamp margins. Can be found where semi-permanent water exists in inland Australia. They probe the substrate for worms, crustaceans and insects.

Additional Notes: A tiny grey-brown mottled sandpiper with white wing-bars when viewed in flight. They arrive in Australia in August, depart in April, but many birds may overwinter. Breeding takes place in Eastern Siberia and Alaska and nearly all birds observed in Australia display non-breeding plumage.
