Associate Professor Christian Sanders will give the presentation on his research into coastal wetland vulnerability to sea level rise at our first social meeting of 2018. Following is information provided by Christian on what will be a topic of interest to us all.
After Christian’s presentation tea and coffee will be served. Don’t forget small change for raffle tickets.
Scope: There is growing concern that an accelerating sea-level rise will cause flooding in coastal areas by the end of this century. However, many current estimates are based on general sea level rise and do not consider an increase in sediment accretion by coastal wetlands. To date there has not been a broad-scale examination of whether the multiple timescales represent the processes of accretion and elevation change are equally well-suited for quantifying the trajectories of wetland vertical change in coming century. A/Professor Sanders will present core-based studies of coastal wetland sediments which are shown to provide information on historical climate and peat accretion. His talk will present some important results made possible from the development of a unique facility at the NMSC, a gamma spectrometry facility, funded by the Australian Research Council.
Bio: Associate Professor Christian Sanders is an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow working at the National Marine Science Centre. His research discusses the historical relation between climate change, sea level rise and carbon accumulation in coastal wetlands along the Australian coast and around the globe
