2026 Coffs Coast Sea Slug Census

This event runs in the coastal waters from Brooms Head in the north to Nambucca Heads in the south, and is being held from the 16th January to 24th January 2026 inclusive.

SURG encourages shore-based participants for this event, who can take advantage of the many rock-pools along this part of the coast to track down nudibranchs. In past years searching our rocky shores has resulted in many unique and interesting finds. Some species, similar to the ones below, are likely to be found in the coastal rock-pools.

As part of this event SURG will be running subsidised dives with Jetty Dive during the event, for SURG members only. SURG will subsidise one dive trip, once per diver, whilst the Census is running. SURG will reimburse $100 towards the cost of a dive trip, with a tax invoice receipt to be provided as proof of your dive with a reimbursement request following your trip. Note that SURG is only subsidising the cost of the trip with tanks, but excluding any other dive gear rental, which is the responsibility of each diver.

It is noted that this event is to record Sea Slugs, so whilst owning a camera is not mandatory, it is a requirement that any dive team, or buddy pair, have one.

Data collection for this event will be via the iNaturalist website. This allows “real time” recording of slugs seen, the ability to track progress during the event, and to view other participants’ recordings.

For this event, a few notable photos from participants will be chosen to be displayed on the SURG website.
