Uraspis helvola

Common name: Whitetongue Jack

Distribution: Rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Southeast Atlantic, Western Indian Ocean: southern Red Sea, off Oman and Sri Lanka. Eastern Pacific: Hawaiian and Revillagigedo islands. Reported from the Arafura Sea and Persian Gulf. In Australia this Genus has been recorded across the tropical north of the continent, from Exmouth in Western Australia, the Gulf of Carpentaria, waters of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and the coast of New South Wales south to the Victorian border.

Ecological notes: Frequents offshore reefs and islands, typically sandy bottoms adjacent to reefs. Depth 50 – 300 m, rarely shallower.

Additional notes: This particular species recorded only a small number of times in Australian waters. Solitary or forming small schools, grows to 58 cm.
