Common Name: Common Stingaree
Distribution: Abundant in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Western Pacific. In Australia recorded from the Great Australian Bight around the south of the continent, north along the east coast to Central Queensland, and including eastern Tasmania.
Ecological Notes: Frequents estuaries, coastal waters and rocky reef, preferring muddy and sandy substrate. Depths to at least 135 m, but usually to 60 m.
Additional Notes: The common stingaree is grey to brown above and white below. The tail, with one or two spines, is approximately the same length as the disc is wide and has a small dorsal fin and a leaf shaped caudal fin. Active day or night, stingarees feed on a variety of benthic invertebrates. Grows to 47 cm.
