Common Name: Southern Roughy

Distribution: Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region: southwest Australia, the Great Australian Bight and in waters off Tasmania, New South Wales and southern Queensland.

Ecological Notes: Frequents estuarine and coastal to deeper offshore rocky reefs. Depth 2 – 40 m, but commonly trawled from as deep as 1557 m.

Additional Notes: Almost circular body, bronze in colour with pale stripe followed by dark stripe on operculum, white leading margin to fins, large eye. Often in small to large schools. Feed on shrimp. Grows to 15 cm.
