Sufflamen fraenatum
(Latreille, 1804)

Common Name: Bridled Triggerfish

Distribution: Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region: from East Africa south to Natal, South Africa, east to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. In Australia recorded from Shark Bay in Western Australia north to the Timor Sea, the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, south to southern New South Wales and including Lord Howe Island.

Ecological Notes: Frequents coastal rocky reefs, often silty habitats in lagoons, sand and rubble patches in seaward reefs. Depth 8 – 186 m, usually deeper than 18 m.

Additional Notes: Usually dark, adult males with oblique yellow band from corner of mouth backward and another under the chin. Juveniles with white band at tail base. Solitary species, feed on echinoderms, molluscs, invertebrates and small fishes. Grows to 38 cm.
