Common Name: Amberjack

Distribution: Common throughout the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Circumglobal species. Distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific region: from South Africa and the Persian Gulf to the Hawaiian Islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. Also in the Western and Eastern Atlantic Oceans. In Australia recorded from Perth in Western Australia north to Ashmore Reef and from central Queensland south to southern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: Frequents deep seaward reefs; occasionally entering coastal bays. Small juveniles associated with floating plants or debris in oceanic and offshore waters. Juveniles solitary or in small schools. Depth 1 – 360 m, usually 18 – 72 m.

Additional Notes: Bluish grey or olivaceous above, silvery white below with amber stripe along midside, fins dusky. Less steep head profile than related Samsonfish, Seriola hippos, and deeper body than Yellowtail Kingfish, Seriola lalandi. Sought after sport fish, known for its fighting qualities. Usually seen single or small groups, feeds on small fish. Grows to 190 cm.
