Common Name: Elephant Snail

Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Known from Australia and New Zealand. In Australia ranges from Bowen Queensland, south to Tasmania and across to Geraldton in Western Australia, and including Tasmania.

Ecological Notes: Commonly found in intertidal and shallow rocky reef areas down to a depth of 20 m. Grazes on algae.

Additional Notes: Shell is solid and heavy, with apex at one-third to one-quarter of shell length from posterior margin. Colour white inside and out. Usually the shell is completely enclosed by two flaps on either side of the body. Commonly found under rocks and in crevices it emerges at night to catch drift algae. Grows to 125 mm in length, but commonly around 80 mm.
