Common Name: Blackvein Parrotfish

Distribution: Rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region: from South Africa east to the Tuamoto Islands, north to Ryuku and Hawaiian Islands, south to Shark Bay in Western Australia. Also in the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to the Galapagos Islands. In Australia recorded north from Shark Bay in Western Australia, the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef south to northern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: Frequents seaward reefs, usually over rocky or coral reef, and at boulder strewn slopes at the base of high island cliffs, where it may occur in large schools. Depth 1- 36 m.

Additional Notes: Juvenile as pictured here often red or grey with dark scale edges, An uncommon species that occurs solitary or in pairs, feeds on benthic algae. Grows to 70 cm.
