Common Name: Banded Driftfish
Distribution: Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Circumtropical, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, between latitudes of 37 degrees north and -24 degrees south. In Australia recorded from the northern coast of Western Australia, including offshore reefs, the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland south to northern New South Wales.
Ecological Notes: Juveniles commonly found in association with jellyfish, especially in the summer months. Depth 0 – 650 m.
Additional Notes: Small specimens mottled or banded, adults uniformly black. Oceanic species associated with medusae, where it lives in and around the bell. Juvenile in photograph, around 30 mm. Grows to 25 cm.
