Pervagor janthinosoma
(Bleeker, 1854)

Common Name: Gillblotch Leatherjacket

Distribution: Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region: East Africa to Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to New South Wales and Tonga. In Australia recorded from Geraldton to northern Western Australia, from Torres Strait, the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, south to central New South Wales and including Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands.

Ecological Notes: Frequents coral rich areas of shallow lagoons and seaward reefs. Secretive species among corals, sponges or rocks, hiding if approached. Depth to 20 m.

Additional Notes: Dark blue forebody, greenish at rear and yellow or orange pattern on the tail. Often in pairs but usually only one observed at a time. Similar looking Pervagor alternans frequents similar habitat but may be distinguished by the obvious yellow eye. Grows to 13 cm.
