Ophiomyxa australis
(Lutken, 1869)

Distribution: Common throughout the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Found in waters around Australia, including Tasmania. Recorded from South Africa, Madagascar, Marshall and Gilbert Islands and Indo – West Pacific region generally.

Ecological Notes: Frequents both shallow and deep reefs, has been recorded out in the open as well as under rocks. Depth to at least 1450 m.

Additional Notes: Only a single species of this Genus known from shallow Australian waters. Pattern and colouration may vary widely, reds and browns predominate. Arms relatively short and distinctly banded, with short blunted spines. Disc diameter 35 mm, arm length up to 140 mm.
