Common Name: Fivebar Flagtail

Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the eastern Pacific and Indo-Pacific region: Red Sea and East Africa to the eastern Pacific, north to southern Japan, south to Australia. In Australia recorded from Torres Strait, the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef in Queensland south to central New South Wales and including Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands.

Ecological Notes: Frequents reef margins of rocky shorelines from just below breaking surf to a depth of a few metres. Young sometimes found in tidal pools. Depth range from intertidal to 18 metres.

Additional Notes: Silvery colour with distinctive horizontally barred tail. Usually occur in tightly packed school, which feeds on free-swimming crustacean and small fish, mostly at night. Grows to 40 cm.
