Abundant in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific region, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Fiji and the Marshall Islands. In Australia found from the Recherche Archipelago in south Western Australia to Broome in the north, from the northern Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea south to Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs.
Habitat varies from shallow, turbid waters to deeper water on fringing reefs.
Colour usually grey-green or grey-brown. Growth form varies with light, depth and water turbidity. Shallow water specimens may be convoluted and upright, specimens on reef slopes form upright vase like shapes with the laminae becoming more horizontal as the depth increases. Colonies may grow to 1m across and may be the dominant species in shallow turbid water habitats.
