Common Name: Yellowmouth Moray

Distribution: Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region: Red Sea and South Africa, to the Hawaiian and Marquesas Islands, north Ryuku Islands, south to New Caledonia. In Australia recorded from isolated locations in northern Western Australia and southern Queensland, northern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: Mostly oceanic locations where it frequents inner and outer reef slopes. Depth recorded from 271 m, usually 30 m.

Additional Notes: Yellowish brown body colour with fine light spots that get larger and less dense toward the tail. Mouth has bright yellow interior and there is a black patch at the gill opening. Mucus is reportedly toxic. Bottom photograph shows smaller specimen in exact same geographic location. Grows to 180 cm.
