Common Name: Goldspot Mullet
Distribution: Abundant in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific region; southern Australia from Geraldton in Western Australia to Cooktown in Queensland. Rare in Tasmania.
Ecological Notes: Frequents coastal and estuarine areas, travelling upstream to brackish and fresh water. Prefers shallow silty and sandy habitat, often in large schools.
Additional Notes: Silvery, with small yellow patch on upper operculum near pectoral fin base. Feeds on filamentous algae, zooplankton and small crustaceans. Sought after baitfish, often trapped or netted. May often be seen jumping at the surface. Grows to 45 cm, commonly 30 cm.
