Filicampus tigris
(Castelnau, 1879)

Common Name: Tiger Pipefish

Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Endemic to Australia and known from central Queensland south to near Sydney in New South Wales, Spencer Gulf in South Australia, and in West Australia from Broome to south of Perth.

Ecological Notes: Frequents areas with mud and rubble and covering of sparse plant growth, often in estuaries. Depth to 27 m.

Additional Notes: Males and females have similar colouration, males brood young in pouch under the tail, not visible unless with brood. White spots on ventral edge aid identification, also some specimens with pale blue patches. Feeds primarily on small crustaceans. Grows to 30 cm.
