Epinephelus undulatostriatus
(Peters, 1866)

Common Name: Maori Cod

Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Endemic to Australia, ranges from southern Queensland to Bateman’s Bay in southern New South Wales, and including Lord Howe Island.

Ecological Notes: Frequents coastal rocky and coral reef, deep estuaries to 80 m depth.

Additional Notes: Small juveniles are orange brown with a distinct black stripe under the dorsal fin, yellow tips to dorsal, anal and tail fins. Adults more pale with reticulated pattern breaking into spotted, less distinct lines, yellow tips on fins. Specimen shown here accompanied by juvenile slender suckerfish, Echeneis naucrates. Grows to 61 cm.
