Chaetodon tricinctus
(Waite, 1901)

Common Name: Threeband Butterflyfish

Distribution: Rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Limited distribution confined to south western Pacific region, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. Previously recorded from northern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: Frequents areas of coral rich reefs and lagoons. Depth to at least 15 m.

Additional Notes: Distinctive oval shape with three black stripes, orange lips dorsal, anal and caudal fin margins. Usually occurs in small groups and forms pairs during breeding. Feeds on plankton in the water column. Grows to 15 cm.
