Common Name: Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

Distribution: Found in south-eastern Australia, from Eyre Peninsula, SA to south and central eastern QLD.

Ecological Notes: The Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo favours eucalypt woodland and pine plantations. In coastal areas it is frequently associated with banksia and casuarina plant communities. The favoured food is seeds of native trees, such as banksia and casuarinas, and pinecones. It also feeds on the seeds of ground plants. Wood boring insect larvae are preyed upon.

Additional Notes: Small to large flocks can be observed, either perched or flying on slowly flapping wings. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos are raucous and noisy, and are often heard before being seen.
