Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Known only from the east coast of Australia. More recently reported from Taiwan and Loyalty Islands. In Australia recorded from northern Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef south to central New South Wales, and including Lord Howe Island.
Frequents rocky and coral reef areas, around dead coral outcrops, rubble areas and on the outer edge of reefs. Juveniles on exposed reefs in narrow ledges and cracks. Depth 1 - 15 m.
Distinctly yellow margin of dorsal fin and upper lobe of tail, blue margin to pelvic and anal fin. Secretive, hiding in crevices or under corals when approached. Similar Coral Sea Gregory, Stegastes gascoynei, has yellow anal fin and lacks any yellow on the caudal fin. Grows to 15 cm.
