Very abundant throughout the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Endemic to Australia, recorded from southern Queensland to eastern Victoria.
Frequents coastal and offshore reefs and islands. Schooling species in some places filling every hole or crevice available. Depth 10 - 20 m.
Broad reddish-black stripe along mid-body with white or yellow stripe above, black stripe from nose through rays of dorsal fin, white belly. Often seen feeding in the water column, in small to very large groups, retreating to safety of holes and crevices in the substrate when approached. Grows to 10 cm.
