Gymnothorax kidako (Temminck and Schlegel, 1847)

Common Name: 
Kidako Moray
Distribution: 

Rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Northwestern Pacific Ocean, specifically the ocean regions around Taiwan, parts of the Philippines, and southern Japan. In Australia recorded from southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: 

Frequents rocky and coral reef areas, where it shelters in crevices and under rocks, coral slabs, recorded from depths up to 350 m.

Identification courtesy of Australian Museum and John Pogonoski from CSIRO Hobart. This species not photographed in Australian waters previously, known from an Australian Museum record from the Sydney area. Specimen pictured approximately 70 cm.
