Uncommon to rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Western Pacific region from Australia to New Caledonia and Tonga, north to southern Japan and south to Norfolk Island. In Australia reported from Shark Bay in Western Australia, north to Ashmore Reef and throughout the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.
Frequents sand and rubble areas adjacent to rocky and coral reefs, in lagoons and outer slopes. Depth from 15 to at least 50 m.
Silver grey base colour with scattered dark coloured scales, sometimes with vertical dark bar through the eye. Usually observed just above the bottom where it feeds on bottom dwelling gastropods. May change colour rapidly, grows to 45 cm.
