Abundant in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed in the Western Pacific region: from Eastern Australia, Lindeman Island in Queensland south to Montague Island in southern New South Wales.
Frequents rocky and coral reefs generally in shallow water. Depth 1 - 20 m.
Distinctive pattern of brown lines on green face of male. Juveniles and females have variable colouration, from green to brown, but with spot at front of dorsal fin, see top photograph. Similar Pseudolabrus luculentus male has distinct row of black and white dots below the dorsal fin, intermediate phases have yellow anal fin. Grows to 18 cm.
