Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific, east coast of Africa to Japan, the Philippines and New Caledonia. In Australia recorded from Shark Bay and Exmouth region of Western Australia, and southern Queensland.
Inhabits coral and rocky reef, shallow lagoons and reef drop offs, to a depth of at least 160 m.
Usually solitary, adults normally have a oval shaped blue/black spot near the tail, which may be indistinct with age. Feeds on a variety of larger benthic invertebrates. Grows to about 55 cm.
