Rare in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout the Pacific Ocean extending to Easter Island. Known from Indonesia to the Marquesas and Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands and south to Scott Reef on north western shelf off Western Australia. In Australia recorded from the Great Barrier Reef.
Adults frequent seaward reefs, reef slopes and drop-offs, usually in groups comprising a single male and several females. Depth to 30m.
Feeds on small crustaceans, molluscs and polychaete worms. Similar Anampses meleagrides female has completely yellow tail. Grows to 12cm.
