Uncommon in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Known from southern Queensland south to Westernport Bay, Victoria.
Frequents coastal regions: rocky reefs and deep harbours. Usually a deep water species only rarely seen in shallower depths. Depth to at least 300m.
Sexes have markedly different colouration. Males have blue bodies with golden sides, while female and juveniles are lighter brown with yellow and brownish blotches. Males have a distinct bump on the snout. Large juvenile pictured here. Grows to 35cm.
