Aptychotrema rostrata
(Shaw, 1794)

Common Name: Eastern Shovelnose Ray

Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Endemic to Australia, distributed along eastern Australia from Central Queensland to southern New South Wales.

Ecological Notes: Frequents sandy areas off beaches and estuaries to depths of 60 m.

Additional Notes: This species is recognised by the sandy colouration with darker blotches and its long triangular snout. It preys on crustaceans, molluscs and small fishes. Ovoviviparous with up to 4 in a litter, around 13 cm long at birth. Grows to 1.2 m.
