Distribution: Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Known from the east coast of Australia and New Zealand.

Ecological Notes: Frequents bays and estuaries and may be locally common depending on availability of algal food source.

Additional Notes: Recognised by the reddish orange colouration and dark vein-like markings. It is an active swimmer, and if disturbed produces a cloud of reddish purple ink. Large numbers may be washed ashore after storm events. Grows to 400 mm in length but more commonly 150 – 200 mm. Specimen in top photo approximately 220 mm, discovered in intertidal rock pool.
