Abudefduf sexfasciatus
(Lacepede, 1801)

Common Name: Scissortail Sergeant

Distribution: Relatively common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Known from the Indo-Pacific region: from the Red Sea, Mozambique and the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa Islands. In Australia recorded from central Western Australia, across the tropical north to Queensland, south to central NSW, including Lord Howe Island.

Ecological Notes: Frequents coastal reefs and islands, depth range from 1 to 20 metres.

Additional Notes: Juveniles similar to adults. Distinguished from other members of the family by the horizontal dark stripes on upper and lower lobes of the caudal fin. See also Abudefduf whitleyi and Abudefduf bengalensis. Often associates with other members of the genus, particularly Abudefduf vaigiensis. Feeds on planktonic organisms in the water column. Grows to 19cm.
