Social meeting: Guest speaker - Dan Bloom on the use of drones for fishing compliance

Wednesday, 6 September 2017 - 7:00pm
National Marine Science Centre
Charlesworth Bay Road
Coffs Harbour NSW 2450

Dan will tell us what a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is and how it works. Dan will then tell us how this new technology can be adapted for use in fishing compliance roles, both for recreational and commercial fishers.
The Solitary Islands Marine Park covers a large area and is therefore very difficult for the Marine Parks Authority to ensure that fishers are complying with the marine park objectives. Dan's research into the use of drones will assist the authorities in deciding whether the new drone technology can assist in the essential compliance required to protect our marine parks. Dan's experiment is to use drones to detect crab traps in estuaries, something close to SURG's heart at this moment!
