This event occurs within coastal waters from Brooms Head in the north to Nambucca Heads in the south, and is being held from the 25th of January to the 2nd of February 2025.
Most scuba-divers are familiar with nudibranchs, or sea slugs, as they are often sighted while diving offshore around the Solitary Islands Marine Park. We encourage all scuba-divers to submit their photos but there are also many opportunities to find and photograph nudibranch species in the rock pools found on the rocky headlands between Brooms Head and Nambucca Heads.
This activity is one the whole family can be involved in and SURG encourages shore-based participants to take part. Close inspection of the pools at low tide on our rocky shores can reveal many interesting species, some of which are only ever found in these habitats.
The purpose of this event is to photographically record every sea slug sighting, so whilst owning an underwater camera is not mandatory, it is a requirement that any scuba-dive team, rock-poolers or buddy pair, have one, so the photographs can then be submitted via the iNaturalist website. For this event we are planning on displaying the more interesting photos from our participants on this website.
If you are not too familiar with the nudibranchs found in our area, the SURG website has many photographs of different species here.
