id by Peter Davie 110820 I think it is Pontonides unciger Calman, 1939 (typically associated with bushy black corals, Rhipidipathes and possibly Antipathes; Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea, Kenya, Marquesas Is., Vietnam; 40–50 meters)

Looks a good match to me, and I am confident that is the name. It is within the known range (East Africa to SW Pacific), but would be the first record for Australia. Funny thing is I can't find any confirmed literature record of even the genus from Australia. From the ALA it seems we have a couple of Pontonides ankeri from New Guinea that were originally identified as P. uncifer, but don't know who changed the name. And the AM apparently has two specimens but I can't see any locality data on the records!

Should do a short record note in the Memoirs on it -- I will add it to the list.

Cheers,

Peter Davie see also later email Sorry Ian, but I think I will revise my opinion and agree with you that Pontonides ankeri is the best name to use. I got hold of Marin's paper, and ankeri is the best match after all. I am attaching it for your interest.

P. unciger is certainly a good separate species and I think it does indeed have similar patterning. The critical difference is that it has a much longer rostrum, and seems to lack the dorsal hump toward the front of the carapace. Your pics seem to show a deep corrugation especially behind the eyes, but I think it is actually just a trick of the colouring and shell transparency and it is actually a smooth slope as in the drawings. I initially thought I could see a longer rostrum which pushed me away from ankeri, but with a better idea of what I am looking at, and using a bit of interpretation, I now think it is relatively short after all and does match what ankeri is supposed to have.

Always a pain trying to work from photos! email 120820
