Echinometra mathaei (Blainville, 1825)
Common in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Distributed throughout tropical Indo-West Pacific region. Recorded from the south west coast of Western Australia, around the tropical north to southern NSW on the east coast, and including Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands.
Prefers shallow habitats where it bores into the rock or reef substrate. Herbivorous, feeding on algae. Known to a depth of at least 30m.
Spines stout, usually with a white circle around the base and often with a white tip. Grows to about 75mm.
